Selkirk is named for a Scottish border town that was the ancestral home of the winemaking family. Careful vineyard management and controlled yields ensured premium fruit for the award winning Selkirk Shiraz. After fermentation in small batch open top fermenters, the wine spent eighteen months in carefully selected fine grain American oak. A proportion of new (30%) American oak barriques were used to enhance its pallet structure and flavour complexities without masking the varietal fruit characters. The Selkirk shows a deep, vibrant colour and offers distinctive Shiraz fruit characters that are further highlighted by the superior wood treatment. Rich aromas of blackberries, complemented by spicy oak nuances, sophisticatedly brazen, with a lifted pepper, blue and lackberries, and a hint of sweetness. Smooth and persistent, it's moderately long and juicy, with some pleasing fruit sweetness, but reveals more raisined and currant-like flavours towards its slightly dehydrated and salty finish. A layered, well-balanced palate structure and a persistent finish enhance the rich flavours with touches of spice. Magnificently crafted from an excellent vintage, a wine which matches well with robust haute cuisine
